Starting with Yoga: How to use yoga props?

pomucky Korkie

If you are just starting with yoga, you might feel that yoga props are only for advanced practitioners or teachers. But the opposite is true. Props like blocks, straps, blankets, or bolsters are here precisely to support you on your yoga journey – whether you are a complete beginner or a regular practitioner.

In this article, we will show you how these props work, how they can help you achieve proper body alignment, improve comfort, and a sense of safety during your practice. The right prop can make the difference between tension and relaxation, between "I can't do it" and "yes, I can".

Yoga Blocks – support for body and mind

Yoga blocks are one of the most versatile props you can incorporate into your yoga practice. They help you achieve solid support – literally. For example, if you can't reach the floor in a forward bend, a block will offer you support and space where you don't have to overstretch your body and can still achieve an effective and healthy stretch.

They are also used as support in various poses – for example, under the lower back when lying in a backbend, under the hands when we lack balance in a one-legged standing pose, or under the knees in butterfly pose. If you have tight hamstrings or stiff hips, blocks will help you find balance without stress and pain. And when you need a moment of rest? A block under your chest or head will provide deep relief.

"TIP: Try different heights – you can place the block vertically, horizontally, or flat. Three options mean three different levels of support, so you'll always find the one that suits you best."

Yoga Straps – extending arms and supporting posture

A strap is a prop that primarily helps where we currently lack flexibility. It allows us to extend our arms without having to hunch our backs or overload our joints. Typically, it is used, for example, in a seated forward bend to extended legs or when opening the shoulders.

Thanks to the strap, we don't have to force ourselves into a position that our body doesn't yet allow. It helps maintain proper posture while teaching us to respect our boundaries. In therapeutic yoga, it is often also used to stabilize joints or for passive stretching.

Choosing the right yoga mat – the foundation of your practice

A yoga mat is the foundation of the entire practice – whether you are doing gentle stretching or dynamic flow. For beginners, it is important that the mat is non-slip, has sufficient thickness for joint comfort, and also provides stability for balance poses.

A quality mat supports not only physical but also mental stability. When you know that your mat won't "slip away", you can focus more on your breath, movement, and presence. Natural materials like rubber or cork also provide natural contact with the surface and do not burden the environment.

Yoga wheel – chest opening and back release

The yoga wheel is a modern prop that is quickly gaining popularity due to its versatility. It is most often used for opening the chest, stretching the spine, and improving shoulder flexibility. By placing your back on the wheel and slowly gliding backwards, the spine is mobilized – ideal for those who spend a lot of time at the computer.

In addition to stretching the back, it can also be used to strengthen the core, train balance, or as a support in more challenging asanas. Its shape naturally follows the curvature of the spine and provides both support and challenge, making it an excellent aid not only for beginners but also for advanced practitioners.

"TIP: Try slowly lying down on the wheel so that it supports the middle of your back. Relax your arms to your sides, close your eyes, and breathe deeply – an ideal short regenerative break during the day.

Foot massage ball – awaken nerve endings

We often neglect our feet, even though they are our foundation. The massage ball stimulates reflex points on the sole of the foot, promotes blood circulation, and relieves tension. With regular use, it also helps with heel pain, calf overload, or general foot fatigue.

Exercising with a massage ball also improves the mind-body connection – the nervous system is activated through the feet. Just a few minutes a day and your body will start to feel firmer, more stable, and more relaxed.

"TIP: Place the ball under your foot while brushing your teeth in the morning or evening and roll it back and forth. A great mini-ritual to start the day or gentle relaxation before bed.

Natural yoga bolster – muscle regeneration and stretching

Grant your body and mind deep relaxation. The bolster – a supportive cylindrical pillow – is designed to provide you with support during your yoga practice, restorative poses, breathing exercises, and meditation. Its buckwheat filling naturally adapts to the shape of your body while providing firmness where needed.

Most common uses:

  • For relaxation: Lie on your back and place the bolster under your knees – this will relieve your lower back.

  • For breathing exercises: Place the bolster along your spine and lie on your back, opening your chest and encouraging deeper breathing.

  • For forward bends: Sit and lean forward, resting your upper body on the bolster – your head and arms will be comfortable, and your body will relax naturally.

  • For meditation: It serves as comfortable support under your buttocks, helping to straighten your back and sit longer without pain.

Meditation aids - for a peaceful mind

Meditation Cushion – Comfort and Stability for a Calm Mind

Long periods of sitting in meditation can be uncomfortable if the body is not properly supported. A meditation cushion (zafu) helps to straighten the spine, release the hips and prolong your sitting practice without pain. By raising the pelvis above the level of the knees, it prevents stiffness in the legs and tension in the lower back.

Natural fillings (e.g., buckwheat hulls or spelt) adapt to the body while maintaining a firm shape. Whether you practice mindfulness, pranayama, or simply want to start a regular moment for yourself, a meditation cushion is more than just a comfortable accessory – it is a support for inner stability.

Herbal Eye Pillow – Relaxation for the Nervous System

A light pillow filled with dried herbs (e.g., lavender, chamomile, or mint) is an ideal tool for deep relaxation during Savasana or meditation. It darkens the eyes, relieves tension in facial muscles, and through aromatherapy, also acts on the nervous system.

The weight of the pillow gently stimulates points around the eyes and forehead, helping to calm the mind and transition into parasympathetic mode – a state of regeneration. When warmed, it can help clear sinuses, and when cold, it can refresh and relieve headaches.

TIP: Before use, warm the pillow for a short while (e.g., on a radiator or in a bag with warm water), place it over your eyes during final relaxation, and let the scent and weight work their magic.“

Conclusion

Props are not a sign of weakness, but an expression of wisdom and self-care. They allow you to adapt your practice to grow safely, with respect and joy. Don't be afraid to use them – they are there for you.

Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, there is always a way to approach yoga so that it makes sense and works for you.
